5 Reasons to Join Breed Organizations and Grow Your Farm Community

Why I’m In Breed Organizations — And Why You Might Want to Be, Too!

Running a farm, whether small or large, means wearing countless hats — breeder, caretaker, marketer, transporter, and often, lifelong learner. Over the years, one of the most valuable choices I’ve made is joining breed organizations for the animals I raise and care for. From goats to quail and even cavies, these organizations have played an essential role in my personal and professional growth. Here’s why they matter — and why they might be worth considering for you, too.

1. Building a Strong Community

Farming can feel isolating at times, especially when you’re navigating unique challenges or rare breeds. Breed organizations provide a built-in network of people who get it.

Being surrounded by fellow breeders and farmers means there’s always someone to share advice, troubleshoot problems, or simply cheer you on. These connections have opened doors to collaborations, friendships, and learning opportunities that would have been hard to find on my own.

For me, community isn’t just a perk — it’s part of my farm’s foundation. Farming may be independent work, but no one truly thrives in isolation.

2. A Hub for Education and Growth

No matter how long you’ve been in agriculture, there’s always something new to learn. Breed organizations offer access to resources that keep you growing and improving.

From educational webinars and workshops to breed-specific research and publications, these organizations help me refine my breeding programs and stay up-to-date with emerging trends. That constant learning ensures I’m always raising healthy, high-quality animals that meet and even exceed breed standards.

3. Advocating for Breed Preservation

Heritage and rare breeds have always held a special place in my heart. Whether it’s Miniature Dairy Goats, Gloucestershire Old Spots, or my beloved quail, I believe in preserving genetic diversity and promoting ethical breeding practices.

Being part of breed organizations allows me to do just that — to advocate for the animals I love, to help preserve their unique traits, and to educate others on why these breeds matter in modern agriculture. By supporting breed registries and standards, we collectively ensure these animals are here for future generations.

4. Opportunities to Lead and Give Back

Joining isn’t just about taking; it’s also about giving. Over the years, I’ve taken on leadership and volunteer roles that allow me to share my skills and experience to help others.

As the Social Media Chairperson for the Miniature Dairy Goat Association (MDGA), for example, I’ve been able to grow their online community, create educational content, and celebrate the accomplishments of our members. Sharing knowledge and encouraging engagement has been one of the most rewarding parts of my involvement.

5. Professional Credibility and Trust

Membership in breed organizations shows your dedication to high standards and ethical practices. For customers, students, and peers, it’s a sign that you’re committed to learning, improvement, and transparency.

In my own business, being part of these organizations builds trust. It demonstrates that I’m not just raising animals — I’m actively working to better my practices and uphold the integrity of the breeds I work with.

The Bigger Picture

At the end of the day, being in breed organizations isn’t just about me or my farm. It’s about contributing to something larger: a community of people who care deeply about their animals, their farms, and the future of agriculture.

If you’re on the fence about joining a breed organization, my advice is simple: do it. The resources, connections, and opportunities to learn and grow are invaluable — no matter where you are in your journey.
