Building Community Through Heritage: Why I’m Excited About the GOSPBU Relaunch

When I started breeding Gloucestershire Old Spots (GOS) pigs back in 2020, I knew I wasn’t just adding another species to the farm—I was joining a legacy. These spotted pigs carry a rich history that stretches across centuries, and every breeder who raises them today plays a part in preserving that heritage for the future.

But here’s the truth: keeping a heritage breed alive and thriving isn’t something one person can do alone. It takes community. It takes breeders and farmers willing to share knowledge, track genetics, maintain records, and support one another in both challenges and successes.

That’s where organizations like the Gloucestershire Old Spots Pig Breeders United INC (GOSPBU) come in.

Why Being Part of an Organization Matters

When you’re part of an organization, you’re not just an individual breeder working in isolation—you’re part of something larger. Membership brings:

  • Shared Knowledge – Access to collective experience, whether you’re a new breeder learning the ropes or a seasoned farmer fine-tuning your herd.
  • Support System – A place to ask questions, celebrate wins, and troubleshoot problems without judgment.
  • Record-Keeping & Registry Access – Tools to keep your herd pedigrees accurate, traceable, and valuable.
  • Networking & Opportunity – Connections with breeders, buyers, and enthusiasts who all share the same passion.

Organizations bring structure to the passion we already have, ensuring our efforts don’t just benefit our individual farms, but also the breed as a whole.

The Relaunch of GOSPBU

I’m thrilled to share that GOSPBU is relaunching on October 1st. This registry is more than just paperwork—it’s the backbone of breed preservation. Without strong records, heritage breeds risk being lost to time, but with them, we ensure each pig’s story continues for generations.

The new launch will focus on:

  • Faster turnaround times for registrations
  • Clear communication and transparency
  • Member-driven decision-making
  • A supportive, farmer-led community

For me personally, being part of this relaunch isn’t just an honor—it’s a responsibility. I believe in this breed and in the people who raise them, and I want to do my part in keeping both strong.

How You Can Get Involved

If you’re already raising Gloucestershire Old Spots pigs—or if you’re just starting out—I encourage you to follow the GOSPBU Facebook Page and join the group. Once we officially launch, membership will be the best way to stay involved, register your pigs, and be part of the bigger picture.

Together, as a community, we can ensure that Gloucestershire Old Spots continue to thrive—not just on our farms, but in history books, dinner tables, and the hearts of future generations.

Final Thought

Heritage farming isn’t always easy. It requires patience, dedication, and sometimes tough choices. But when we work together, the load is lighter and the rewards are greater. Being part of an organization like GOSPBU gives us a home base—a place where our passion for pigs becomes a movement for preservation.

On October 1st, we’re not just relaunching a registry. We’re reaffirming our commitment to the GOS breed and the community that sustains it. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of it.

Will you be joining us? Together, let’s keep these beautiful spotted pigs thriving for generations to come.
